Challenges and Strategies When First Responders Address Mental Health Crises

Posted on January 19th, 2023

New York City’s recent push for institutionalizations by first responders has received major pushback.

Advocates argue that social workers and other community responders are a better and safer choice for crisis intervention.

Today on All Sides, we’ll take a look at how progressive, first response models are taking shape and how police departments are adapting to behavioral needs.

We’ll also address what risks are presented by involving police rather than social or medical workers.

Guests:

  • Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg - senior reporter for The Appeal
  • Steve David - community organizer with the Columbus Safety Collective
  • Dr. Ronal Serpas - professor in criminology and justice at Loyola University New Orleans
